of life and music

August 9th, 2005

have you ever experienced hearing a particular song, then immediately be transported to that time and place when you first heard that song, enjoyed it, and would listen to it often? im sure you have. isnt it just a wonderful flurry of sensations? for one thing, you relish the moment, reminisce on days that has passed. on opportunities taken and opportunities lost. and not only do you remember the time and place, but even the mood, the environment, your thoughts and feelings…

i dont know about you, but i do.

but then you try to listen to the song again and again, trying.. squeezing every feeling, every memory, every emotion.. when you realize that slowly, that song is becoming part of your current life, your current time. the song of the past is becoming the song of the present. the memory of the past, quickly fades.. as it makes room for the now.

with the fear of losing something that precious, you stop listening to that song altogether. preserving, what seems to be, a part of your identity. and even at the risk of sounding cheesy, a part of your soul.

… which (thanks to that wonder of technology more commonly known as “shuffle”) sometimes resurfaces.. helping you not to forget, who you are.. and who you once were.
