staking my claim on my (domain) name

July 27th, 2007

and it rhymes too.

i have this sudden fixation obsession very strong desire to stake my claim on my name (or web identity, or web presence, or whatever thats called).

i wanna claim the words “baylon” “anton” and maybe “marco”. make sure that it points to me – like when doing a google search. its kinda vain i know, but i feel it would prove useful, and that its gonna be tougher to do this in the future.

i also want a domain name now. im thinking “baylon.ph”. cool huh? i can share it with my bros and we can have like, http://anton.baylon.ph or marco@baylon.ph. sweeeet.

problem is, dotPh domains are almost twice as expensive as dotCom or other domains.

$35 a year.

what do you think? is that a deal or a steal?

the apple store – me, buffy & makky

July 25th, 2007

(continuation of this post)

a week ago, buffy (my external HDD) somehow stopped working on the mac – i mean makky. (nicole and i named it from the main character of My Boss My Hero). i have a habit of naming my stuff. needless to say i freaked out – thats 250gigs of pictures and movies and data in there. i checked it and it worked fine with my IBM laptop. so i searched the net for possible reasons why its not working on the mac and found that other people were experiencing the same thing.

the forums suggested that the problem was in the Mac OS X v10.4.10 software update. somehow it messes up the drivers for many external HDDs. the solution, they say, was to downgrade back to v10.4.9 and everything would work just as it did before. another message board suggested that we dont have to reinstall the whole package, just certain binaries related to the USB. so i followed the guides step by step, it was rather tedious. fast-forward to the reboot after the installation, i couldnt even find the right word for how i felt when i couldnt move the mouse pointer with my mouse/trackpad and pressing frantically on the keyboard without any effect.. i was, i was. stupefied. almost to tears. the only button working was the power button. i still shudder at the memory.

[edit 07/26]

i had to calm down. i turned makky off and placed it aside. had dinner. and started to come up with a plan B.

Plan B:
- check Apple Website for phone number of Apple Support
- call Apple Support. ask for the nearest Apple Service Center
- go to Apple Service Center.

Risks/Issues&Concerns
- i may have to do all of this in Japanese.

i had made a reservation online for 1:00pm – 1:30pm. couldnt find the building at first – although it had a big apple logo in front, there were trees blocking the logo. inside. it was apple heaven.

it was like being in an art gallery. maybe. i might have gotten too excited.

[edit 07/27]

okay. im getting bored of writing this already.
in a nutshell:

  • i was at the apple store from 1pm – 7:30pm.
  • i went home 3 times – first to eat lunch, second to uh – i forgot, and third to get my jacket coz it was getting cold.
  • makky is working now, so is buffy. we’re all very happy.
  • makky got reformated, which i guess is a good thing. all the songs are safe, since its been sync-ed with sophie (black 60gb ipod – nicole and i got the name from the da vinci code, since we bought the ipod right after watching the movie. it was either sophie or robert. robert langdon – which wouldve been a funny name for an ipod.)

the end. finally.
now moving on to other things.

word for the moment: epherema

July 22nd, 2007

epherema

  • Those bits of throwaway paper of every day life (eg: advertising, ticket stubs, programs, some booklets and pamphlets, etc)
  • From the Greek work ephemeron, meaning something that disappears quickly.
  • From the Greek word ephemeros, which means ‘lasting but a day,’ ephemera refers to anything transitory or short lived; items produced, regardless of the century, that were not meant to last are considered ephemera. Items included in the catch all category ephemera include 19th century valentines, political posters and buttons, and invitations to film premiers and gala openings.

of contact lenses, the apple store and the OotP

July 22nd, 2007

which stands for Order of the Phoenix, just in case.

well.

so back in around february, while i was still in the philippines, i had this brilliant idea of switching to contact lenses. i had this crazy imagination of my eyes and my nose slowly being distorted due to the weight of my glasses (i have rimless, wire-frame glasses by the way, yes, not heavy at all). and honestly really, i am that vain. the only reason why i didnt want to use contact lenses in the first place is because i found it rather.. uh.. scary, to be poking your eyes like that (its an eyeball fercryinoutloud). well anyway, i gathered up my courage and gave it a shot. i said to myself, “you have got to face your fears marco, if you cant do this, what more the other more frightening things in life? like.. needles/injections.. or.. that wooden thing the doctor puts in your tongue and tells you to say ‘aaah’… yeah, that one? you can do this man!”. i am quite the encourager.

its a funny story, really. that time when i asked them to prescribe me the right lenses. in summary though, coz i still have the apple store and harry potter to talk about, the person teaching me how to put them in got really really irritated coz it was taking me forever to put them in. they were used to people taking a long time, but me? hahahaha. i took a long time. let’s leave it at that.

so when i finally got my box, the contact lens solution was in it – which meant i could start putting them on already. so i have been trying the past few weeks, about 20-30mins at a time. i cant really say how many times ive tried before. but today.. i finally got it in! (woohoo!) one of them at least. ironically, i would always practice with my right eye, but one try of putting it in my left eye.. then poof! it disappeared! for the longest time i thought it just fell to the floor or somewhere. i mean, it couldnt be in my eye. not on the first try. i did feel something in my eye though, but i was confused if it was really there or its just my imagination (for those who know me well, know that when it comes to these things, i kinda freak out). wow.. this is getting long.

well anyway, since i had no idea if it was in or not, i just assumed it was not in. my eyesight? i cant really tell, it did fix it a bit, but not completely. but what finally gave it away was when i put on my glasses, after a few minutes, i start to get dizzy.. like my grade has been messed up. that was the sure sign i did have my lenses in my left eye already.

argh, the apple store and OotP will have to wait.

so now i have both contacts in, and i will be trying to take them off, like right now.

best of luck to you dude!
(thanks man!)
