QT: March 31

Deuteronomy 17:14a
14 You are about to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you…

Luke 9:13-17
13 But Jesus said, “You feed them.”

“But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Or are you expecting us to go and buy enough food for this whole crowd?” 14 For there were about 5,000 men there.

Jesus replied, “Tell them to sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 So the people all sat down. 16 Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. 17 They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers!

Psalm 71:15
15 I will tell everyone about your righteousness.
All day long I will proclaim your saving power,
though I am not skilled with words.

Psalm 72:1-2
1 Give your love of justice to the king, O God,
and righteousness to the king’s son.
2 Help him judge your people in the right way;
let the poor always be treated fairly.

Proverbs 12:8-9
8 A sensible person wins admiration,
but a warped mind is despised.
9 Better to be an ordinary person with a servant
than to be self-important but have no food.

Easter Hangover

Glance Back, Look Forward

March 23rd, 2008

(Easter Guest Post from a good friend and brother, Zeus Martinez)

One of the things that distinguish us from all other life forms on the planet is our ability and capacity to recall.

We are beings who relish our days with as much fervor and sentimentality as the ones who make them. The seemingly unending grains of sand in our hourglasses give way to occasions and episodes, to birthdays and funeralsall of which are piled up beneath us until we cease to make them. Ah, but what then? What will we look forward to after the clichs that we call our lives expire and cease to exist?

Do we simply leave memories in the minds of our loved ones and hope that they put us in a grand fairy tale where we are the hero or the princess of their lives?

Do we aimlessly run towards our demise hoping that the breaths that we take form an aria of sorts when we reach our Final Lap?

Shunbun no Hi

March 20th, 2008

Today is “Shunbun no hi” (春分の日*) or Spring Equinox. In Japan, it is a national holiday to “celebrate nature and love for all living things” (自然をたたえ、生物をいつくしむ). A little poetic, Japan is like that. Equinox is from the Latin words, aequus meaning equal, and nox meaning night. It is supposedly the time of the year when the sun is directly aligned to the equator, which then makes the length of daytime and nighttime equal. But in reality, since we know now that the earth is tilted, it’s never aligned. And daytime is still longer. Oh well. Astronomy.

For me, it’s officially bye-bye to winter and hello to spring. Although it’s still pretty cold in these parts (you can still ski/snowboard until the first week of May), the weather and the scenery has definitely changed – no more snow on the streets, the sky less gloomy, plants and trees are showing some green, and long lost bicycles, for months trapped in snow, are found.

Like the tropical boy that I am, I’m going to miss the winter season. My regret is that I didn’t take enough pictures, and that I kept on sleeping-in on weekends and missed most of the daytime. And I could’ve gone snowboarding more often. Urgh. I certainly learned my lesson.

So winter, it was great. I shall see you again, and by then I’ll be ready.

Leaving you guys with a video of how it looked like here during the last 4 months, from a great song – “Hold Me Down” by Motion City Soundtrack.

*can’t see the japanese characters? leave a comment and let me know ^_^
