Teen under arrest for trying to make bomb to kill classmates

February 27th, 2009

Sheesh. J-Teens. Sapporo J-Teens.

A 16-year-old high school student in Sapporo, already under arrest on suspicion of threatening another student, was served with a fresh warrant Thursday for allegedly trying to make a bomb to kill his classmates, police said.

“I felt I was being looked down on by my classmates and wanted to get back at them. I was thinking to explode (the bomb) in the classroom before spring vacation,” the student, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, was quoted as telling the police.

Nix and I noticed, that even though Japan is a very safe country, there are a few people who are really messed up. I guess it’s because there is so much pressure in this country – pressure to perform and to excel, pressure to be polite and act appropriately, pressure to put in long hours at school or at work, pressure to be the same as everyone else.

Most people can handle the pressure, and turn out to be productive members of Japan, Inc. But those who can’t handle the pressure – well, they *snap*.

And with all these pressures, you’d think that they would have some sort of support system. But they don’t. It’s sad.

I always believed that Filipinos and Japanese can learn so much from each other. And dealing with pressure is one issue I know Pinoys handle so well.

Just my 2yen.

Safari 4 Beta First Impressions

February 25th, 2009

Installation
- Simple. Fast.

Interface
- Apple-ish (of course), which means no Menu Bar, etc. Windows users might have to adjust abit with the user interface. Although I think the new IE has also removed the menu bar. Oh wait, you can choose whether to show the menu bar or not. Ok.

- I like that I have more screen real estate. Nice.

Speed
- Fast (being in Japan probably has something to do with it).

- Hmm.. had a little trouble loading meebo. Maybe it’s a first time load thing.

- Okay, definitely slows down when loading script-heavy sites for the first time (i.e. meebo, wordpress).

Features
- Top Sites interface is interesting. Of course, they “borrowed” this from Google Chrome, and maybe even Opera. Says at the bottom, “As you browse the web, Safari will learn which websites are your favorites, and replaces the websites above with those websites”. Nice.

- Shortcut Keys are intuitive. Or maybe only intuitive for Firefox users. CTRL+T for New Tab, CTRL+W for Close Tab, CTRL+K for the Search Bar, CTRL+L for Address Bar, etc.

- Speaking of Address Bar, another “borrowed” feature is Firefox’s Awesome Bar. But it looks like Safari not only remember page titles and URLs, but also page contents too.

- Mouse Gestures – I miss my Mouse Gestures! Maybe there’s a plugin for that somewhere. hmm…

Others
- Shadows? My WordPress Login page looks different. See below

WordPress Login Safari and Firefox
(Left: Safari, Right: Firefox)

- When Safari asks if you want it to remember your password, it pops up a new window. I like Firefox’s way of showin an unobtrusive bar on the top of the page. I hope they borrow that too.

- (update) I miss my plugins.

High-tech van to help RP startup firms

February 20th, 2009

“It is not a permanent structure but retro-fitted container vans customized for IT [startups] that have no means or funds for starting their own offices. Essentially it’s free space where they are housed, with Internet connectivity, other tools that would help them come up with open-source program initiatives that will give more job opportunities,” Velasquez said.

Wow! I want one! How can we get one of these? Anyone game to create a tech startup with me?
